제가 한국에서 석사 과정을 했을 때 연구실에서 시간을 많이 보냈지만 학교 밖에서 진행된 활동에도 시간을 많이 썼습니다. 그러면서 한국과 자메이카의 문화교류에 관심을 갖게 되었습니다. 왜냐하면 가끔 한국 사람들과 어울리다 보면, 많은 사람들이 자메이카에 대해서 잘 모르고 있다는 것을 느꼈습니다. 자메이카의 위치를 몰라서 아프리카의 한 나라라고 생각하는 사람들도 많았습니다. 그런 것들을 느낄 때면, 내가 좋아하는 한국의 많은 사람들이, 내가 살아온 나라인 자메이카에 대해서도 좋아해주고 많이 알아주었으면 하는 바람이 생겼습니다. 그래서 저는 한국 사람들에게 자메이카 문화를 알리기 위해서 노력했습니다.

첫 번째로, 2016년 6월 9일부터 12일까지 코엑스에서 개최됐던 세계 관광 전시회에 자메이카 홍보 도우미로 동참을 하였습니다. 굿뉴스코 자원봉사 프로그램을 통해 자메이카를 방문했던 자원봉사들과 함께 직접 부스도 설치하고, 홍보물도 준비했습니다. 행사 때에는, 자메이카의 전통 의상을 입고서 부스에 구경하러 온 사람들에게 ‘자메이카는 어떤 나라인지’에 대해 소개해주었고, 유명한 도시들에 대해서도 알려주었습니다. 특히 자메이카는 ‘세계에서 가장 좋은 관광지 3위’를 할 정도로 관광이 유명하기 때문에 그것을 더욱 강조하며 홍보를 했습니다.

 다음으로는 2016년 7월부터 11월까지 국제 사회 공헌 포럼이 주관한 차세대 리더 포럼에 참여하게 되었습니다. 한국과 자메이카의 국제교류 프로젝트를 진행하기로 결정했습니다. 팀의 리더로서 한국과 자메이카의 국제 교류 프로젝트를 진행하면서 기획, 시간 활용, 인내심, 타인의 의견 존중 같은 차세대 리더에게 필요한 조건들을 많이 배웠습니다. 하지만 더욱 많이 배운 것은 다른 것이었습니다. 한국인 3명과 자메이카인 3명으로 이루어진 팀이었기에 프로젝트를, 특히 음식 축제를 기획하고 준비하면서 서로 다른 아이디어들을 많이 나누었고 그때에 제가 몰랐던 한국인의 취향이나 선호를 파악할 수 있었으며, 서로 다른 의견을 조율해 나가면서 모두의 마음이 하나가 되어 성공적으로 행사를 마칠 수 있었습니다.

그 외에도 언어 교류 활동에 많이 참여했습니다. 매년 국제 청소년 연합이 주최하는 영어 말하기 대회에 나가는 학생들의 말하기 원고를 첨삭해주었고, 2014년과 2015년에 열린 대회에서는 사회를 보기도 했습니다. 그리고 아주대학교에서 학기마다 영어 동아리를 만들어서 아주대학교의 학생들에게 영어를 가르쳐주었습니다.

  세계가 하나의 지구촌이 되면서 문화 교류의 중요성은 더욱 커졌습니다. 그래서 저는 한국에서 비공식적이지만 자메이카의 대표로서 한국 문화도 많이 배우고, 자메이카의 문화도 많이 가르쳐주는 것이 굉장히 의미가 있는 일이라고 생각합니다. 저의 작은 꿈이, 앞으로 한국과 자메이카의 사회적 경제적 성장에도 도움이 될 수 있는 큰 꿈이 되기를 소망합니다.

While I was completing my Masters degree in South Korea, I spent a lot of time in my research laboratory; however, I also had the chance to participate in a lot of other activities. One of the areas I had interest in was cultural exchange between South Korea and Jamaica.  This was because while interacting with Koreans, I could feel that they didn’t know much about Jamaica. Many people didn’t even know where Jamaica was located, thinking it was just another African country. When I realized this, I really wanted Koreans who I loved so much to find out about my beloved country. As such, I made an effort to participate in cultural exchange activities.

Firstly, I participated as a Promotion Assistant at the World Tourism Expo, which was held at COEX in June 9-12, 2016 in South Korea. I worked together with volunteers who had previously visited Jamaica through the Good News Corps volunteer program to set up the booths and prepare promotion materials. During the event, I wore Jamaican traditional dress, and shared facts about Jamaica. I also emphasized the fact that Jamaica was recognized as the third most famous tourist site in the world.

Additionally, from June to November of 2016, I had the opportunity to participate in the first cohort of the Next Generation World Leadership Forum, which was organized by the International Social Contribution Forum. Through that program, I managed a project entitled ‘International Exchange between South Korea and Jamaica.’ While pursuing that project, I learned many leadership qualities, such as planning, time management, patience, respecting others’ opinions, etc. Apart from this, I learned many more things. While working with the project team, comprised of three (3) Jamaicans and three (3) Koreans, as we bounced ideas off each other in preparation for a food festival where we promoted Jamaican food, I learned about the tastes and preferences of South Koreans. Also, as we shared opinions, our hearts became one, and we were able to successfully complete the event.

Apart from these activities, I participated in language exchange initiatives. While I was in South Korea, I reviewed the English scripts for students participating in the English Speech Contests, opened on a yearly basis by the International Youth Fellowship. In 2014 and 2015, I participated as the Master of Ceremony for this event. Also, I taught English to students at Ajou University by creating an English Club every Semester.
